![]() Leave it as it is, and start on your coloring.Grins&GigglesPhotography-Rebecca Helton says: (Since I especially like drawing clothes, this is where I need it the most).Īfter you’re satisfied with your work, save. You must add here and there- particularly on the corners where lines usually come from. This is also great for anyone into inking manga- linework happens to be a primary language, since you don’t often have color to express it.Īdding lineweight does not mean making the initial lines thicker. See how certain elements come forward on the picture on the right. You may not notice much of a difference, because along the experience I add certain weight by default… But usually, lines are made on a single weight and look plain. Compare the following pictures (you can click): It also works where it is a line ends or begins, for instance, the beginning should be thick, slowly toning it down to a slimmer line, and finally, thickening the line again. The objects that lie “behind” will often contain a thinner line, whereas the objects that lie before it, should contain a thicker line, to point out distance or perspective. What does linewieght do? For instance, it can separate certain items from others within the lines. After you have everything traced, now we’re going to add lineweight to make it balanced. Now keep tracing from your draft on the new Layer. (For instance, try a Tinting – Basic Round on a red background and see what I mean) So stick with smooth, solid brushes. And when matching the lineart with a darker background, the ‘white ends’ on the linework will look out of place. Also, some brushes’ opacity cannot be adjusted because they will have ‘white ends’. Some Important Notes about Painter brushes:įor as long as I have used Painter, I’ve noticed that not many brushes are good candidates for the typical simple and clean type of lineart- Some brushes, for example, are textured, and these are not good options for begginners. Opacity: 100% (this brush has automatic opacity control by pressure power) Opacity: Varies (this brush is great with lineweight if used on a lower opacity, but you can also go for 100%) On this layer, remember you cannot use any other brushes that are not ‘Ink’) ( NOTE: Liquid Ink brushes will create by default an Ink Layer. Size: 5.4 (again depends on your Canvas size) Liquid Ink – Fine Point (this one is great for smooth, flawless and slightly thicker lines also great for graphic novel/comic lines) Imagine you’re working with a fine inking pen) Size 4.3 (I choose a small size, but it depends on your Canvas Size. ![]() For linework, I recommend the following brushes: (go to the Brushes Palette on the Top right corner) Here we will begin our first step for lines. ( like this chaos) Just make sure you add absolutely everything! It doesn’t matter what brush is chosen in this step. (In the new Layer) sketch away whatever it is you’re gonna work with- add all the lines necessary, all the mess necessary. ~Like in a sketcbook, let’s begin with a draft. ~Now that you have your desired canvas size, make a new Layer. So don’t worry about making your lines at all perfect, if you work big. It will be crisp, and a lot of mistakes can “disappear”. (That I later crop around a 2500×3000 or something, but 4000 is the base, so feel free to change this, or simply, add precise measurements.) As you know- the bigger you work the more beautiful it will look when resized. I tend to work with a 300 dpi and a 4000×4000 pixels. If not, then go ahead and take some notes for Painter: It has great control and a smooth line, and even those with shaky pulse can manage it. Note: I have come across SAI software, and I have to say that despite it’s ‘too-simple-interface’ for my taste, it is actually a great program to deal with lineart. If you want to make your lines vectorized, then this is not the guide for you. I tend to prefer a more traditional take on sketching even on digital software. Provided that you have Corel Painter (I find PS is a pain to my pulse), I will show here some steps to create your own lines and what brushes are best for use.
